Minutes of May 16, 2016 membership meeting

DATES TO REMEMBER

Monday, June 20 – MEMBERSHIP MEETING at the North Ridgeville Library at 7 p.m.

Monday, July 18 – MEMBERSHIP MEETING at the Elyria Art Works, Community Art Center

MINUTES

MEMBERSHIP MEETING – May 16, 2016

Attendance:  Georgann Blair, Nancy Franks, Nancy Gavin, Ludina Mills, Betty Lou Palmer; Karen Sigsworth, Jerry Toich and Vee Valega.  Guests:  Michael McMillan and Cheryl Mravec.

Betty Lou Palmer, president, brought our meeting to order at 7 p.m.  Guests are art teacher at North Ridgeville High School, Michael McMillan, and art teacher, Cheryl Mravec from the Middle School.  They came because we were concerned that we were no longer involved in selecting the Senior Art Gallery Award to be hung in the high school.  In the past after seniors at North Ridgeville High School submitted a piece of visual artwork to be judged by NR Arts Council, we paid to have that work framed.  It was then displayed in the High School for two years after which the student could choose to remove the work or leave it at the school indefinitely.

In recent years the school did not contact us about this program.  We were not able to judge and we were not asked to pay for the framing.  We had written various people in the school with no response.  We want to work with the schools to help in art related projects.

This was discussed and both Cheryl and Mike were happy to have us involved again with this program.  We paid for the framing this year and next year we will be notified of the timing to judge the works which are submitted.  We thank Cheryl and Mike for their time and efforts.

Election of Officers – Ludina Mills, our new treasurer, was unable to attend last month when the other officers were installed.  Betty Palmer installed her tonight.

Finance Report – Ludina Mills, our treasurer, reported our current bank balance is $4,770.30.  She gave copies to members of the financial statement as well as a proposed budget for the fiscal year starting April, 2016 through March, 2017.  She asked our input in making a complete budget.  Dues of $20 are due at this time.  It can be mailed to our P. O. Box 39283 or brought to our next meeting.

Senior Art Gallery Award – The art work which has been chosen is an oil painting on wood, 18 x 24.  It is a beautiful piece that was part of the Beauty and the Beast production by the drama club.  The artist is Brittany Ozanich.  We donated $76.23 to have the art work framed

North Ridgeville City Schools Endowment – Georgann Blair is working on a basket from Arts Council to be donated to the Annual Golf Outing to be held on June 9.  The cost for golf and dinner is $80 and dinner only is $30.

City of North Ridgeville’s Memorial Tree in Memory of Lorrie Ternes – Thank you for the donations by family and friends in memory of Lorrie Ternes.  Lorrie was a long-time member and friend of North Ridgeville Arts Council.  Nancy Franks reported that we plan to have a tree planted in one of the N R Parks and Recreation Parks.  This is a new program.  We will select a tree we feel she would have liked and it will be planted with a 3” x 5” plaque.  The tree will be planted in the fall.  The selection of the Memorial Tree will be discussed at our June meeting.

Artistic Endeavor Scholarship – A committee consisting of Ludina Mills, Nancy Franks, Nancy Gavin, Vee Valega, and Jerry Toich read all 5 of the applications.  It was a difficult decision, but Taylor Mangan was chosen to be the recipient of our $1500 scholarship.  She plans to attend Bowling Green University and major in Interior Design/Architecture.

July Membership Meeting – On Monday, July 18 we will have our monthly meeting at the Elyria Art Works, Community Art Center and Gallery, 336 Broad Street, Elyria, Ohio.  Plan to meet at the North Ridgeville Library at 6:30 p.m. to car pool to the Elyria Arts Works for a tour of their facility.

The Arts Show ‘n Tell Nite – Nancy Franks asked members to bring a piece of their favorite art work.  Each person showed their piece and explained why it is important to them.

Thank you, Mark Madere of Spectralight Photography, for placing our membership card and our minutes on our website, https://ridgevilleartscouncil.wordpress.com   Since our fiscal year is from April through May, our membership dues are due at this time.  If you would like to use our website, a membership card can be obtained on our website.  It can be used for donations, as well.  Thank you.

Betty Palmer moved to close the meeting and Vee Valega seconded the motion.  The motion passed at 8:55 p.m.

Thank you, Betty Palmer, for the delicious refreshments.  Everyone enjoyed the conversation and the delicious food.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Gavin
