Minutes of February 17, 2014 membership meeting

Monday, March 17 – MEMBERSHIP MEETING at the North Ridgeville Library at 7 p.m.

MEMBERSHIP MEETING – February 17, 2014

Attendance: Janet Bird (speaker,) Betty Day, Nancy Gavin, Ilona Manista, Betty Lou Palmer; Karen Sigsworth, Claudia Snyder and Vee Valega.

Program – Janet Bird from The Lorain County Historical Society presented a program on Love of Lace. Many people donate lace when they no longer want to keep it. Janet did much research on the subject and found it very interesting. She shared her knowledge with us and we learned a lot and saw many beautiful pieces. Lace is categorized as “real” and “imitation.” “Real” lace is bobbin lace, made with long wooden bobbins with thread wrapped around them and needle point lace, made with needle and thread. “Imitation” lace is machine made. Both kinds can be very beautiful.

Girls in the olden days were expected to learn how to make lace. Lace machines came about in the late 1700’s. Before 1940 there was a lace making factory here in Elyria.

Financial Report – Betty Day reported that as of January 19 the balance was $4,588.35

North Ridgeville Corn Fest Arts and Crafts Fair – The contracts have been mailed and we have received five contracts.

Major School Performance – This year we are sponsoring a performance at two schools, Wilcox Elementary School and North Ridgeville High School, due to the fact that recently one school was not able to take advantage of our offer. Our contact at the High School has not returned Janet Willoughby’s calls. Cindy Naprestek from Wilcox School has contacted Janet. She has had difficulty, to date, locating a program whose cost does not exceed the funds which we are donating. She will keep in touch with Janet. Janet suggested some possible solutions.
